Historical Society Theme: Connecting the Past to the Present
The Kamiah Historical Society and Museum is located at 518 Main Street across from the Kamiah Emergency Services Building. It is connected to the Kamiah Chamber of Commerce and the Welcome Center.
The museum was built through grants and mostly volunteer work by local people in 1995. It started with the University of Idaho archeology students and professors being allowed to excavate bones of a mammoth that had been found in 1958, then covered up by the landowner. Once consent was given to the Kamiah Historical Society to dig and grants were obtained to build an exhibit building next to the chamber’s Welcome Center in the mid-1990s, a place was born to keep our past alive for future generations.
The museum contains bones of a mammoth found on the edge of town on the Sig Grove property. Artifacts of the McBeth Sisters, and the Nez Perce Nimiipuu, Dr. Bridwell, Dr. Bryan, the old Woodland store, local farmers and loggers, tools, toys, WWII, and many other items from the past. The museum is nostalgic; it takes you back to days long gone, but not forgotten. Next door, in the Welcome Center, is an interesting and informative display about the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery.
The museum staff provides a historic view into the local past and welcomes classroom field trips, tour groups, and scheduled family groups.
The museum bookstore carries books on local history and historical interest written by local artists.
The Museum is a non-profit organization that relies solely on donations. These donations help maintain the museum and keep it Open to the Public—free of Charge.
The museum is open Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from Memorial Day through September 30, or by appointment. Anyone who would like to visit the museum on closed days or during the off-season can call 208-935-2290 at the Welcome Center, and a museum volunteer can arrange a time to tour.
